Life in the Fast Lane . . . it’s more than a song

Remember how back in the 80s (yeah, giving away my age), we would go out with our friends and listen to the Eagles cassettes with our windows down singing at the top of our lungs without a care in the world? Okay, well, that’s what my friends and I used to do. I loved the beat of the song “Life in the Fast Lane.” Well, I don’t really care for that beat anymore. I still love the song, still love the Eagles, but don’t love the beat of life’s fast lane.

How I long for the days of visiting my grandparents in their concrete-block home that had only one outlet per room (sometimes not even one outlet)! When the sun came up, we got up and tended to the animals and worked all day but enjoyed one another’s company. When the sun went down, we came in, cooked and ate supper together, then sat around the fireplace while they told stories of their childhood and I listened in awe and amazement.

Life was much simpler back then, more peaceful and meaningful. Today’s life is so caught up in the ‘rat race’ and keeping up with and surpassing our neighbors’ lifestyles that we forget what is really important - - just talking with family, getting to really know our kids, even getting to know our spouses.

Maybe the recession can give us all time to just slow down and look around at what is really significant to us - I promise, it’s not the newest computer or electronic gadget, but it’s what your child did at school today that really matters.
